Rental qualifications and requirements
How can I pick up my rented car?
You can arrange to be picked up at the San Jose or Liberia airport. We offer this service for free. One of our representatives will meet and greet you at the outside of the arrival terminal, holding a sign that displays your name. Please make sure to provide us with your flight information upon reservation. Or take a taxi to our main office location, about 2 minutes away from the airport.
Can Poas Rent-a-Car deliver the car?
Yes, we can deliver the car to your hotel. We will prepare all the paperwork in advance. This way you can take possession of your car at the hotel without having to wait! No lines, no hassle.
We can also deliver the car to all regions of the country for reasonable fees, please ask your location for details
Do you have an airport location?
No, an office at the airport would require us to raise our rates. You can arrange to have one of our representatives meet you at the airport. Just provide us with your arrival info upon reservation and we will wait for you at the exit of the arrival terminal with a sign that displays your name.
Do you have an office in Liberia?
Yes, we do have an office in Liberia. You can arrange to have one of our representatives meet you at the airport. Just provide us with your arrival info upon reservation and we will wait for you at the exit of the arrival terminal with a sign that displays your name.
Can I return the car at a different location than where I received it?
Yes, you can receive the rental vehicle at one location and return it at a different location, separate fees apply. For instance, if you wanted to receive the car at our San Jose office and at the end of the rental return the car in Liberia (or the other way around); the fee is $50 USD.
How much is the deposit?
The deposit is between $950.00 and $2000, depending on the vehicle model and insurance provisions. At the start of the rental we authorize your card for deposit- and the rental amount. At the end of the rental, we release the deposit back to your credit card.
Can I use my Debit Card?
Yes, but only a means of payment upon returning the car. Please contact your Bank for more information.
Can the car leave the country?
In general, rent a cars cannot be taken out of Costa Rica. We can, however, offer you the following alternative:
1. You tell us the dates that you need a car in Costa Rica
2. You tell us the dates that you need a car in Panama or Nicaragua
3. We arrange the rental in Costa Rica and reserve your car with another company at the border to meet you.
4. All you have to do is meet us at the border to return your car, cross the border (by cab) and have a representative from our strategic rent-a-car partner meet you at the other side of the border with your rent-a-car.
What happens if the rental vehicle experiences mechanical difficulties?
If your rental vehicle experiences mechanical issues, just contact us with the supplied cell phone (from anywhere there is cell phone coverage) 24 hours a day! We will either send you a replacement vehicle or have a mechanic resolve the issue on the spot. Our main goal is to get you back on the road as fast as possible.
Refueling Options
Poas Car Rental has three refueling options available to meet your needs:
You may purchase a tank of gas from Poas Car Rental at time of rental and return the vehicle with as little gas as you prefer. Please be aware that we are unable to issue a refund for unused fuel. However, this method eliminates the need for you to refuel the tank prior to returning.
You can let us refuel for you and only pay for the fuel required to replace the fuel you used, and for the service and convenience of refueling the tank.
You can stop and refuel the tank yourself, immediately prior to returning the vehicle

Age restrictions and exceptions
The minimum rental age is 24 years old.
Drivers between the ages of 23-24 are allowed to rent up to a mid-size vehicle and will be subject to an $8.00 in compact vehicles and $10.00 per day on all other vehicles surcharge. All underage renters must be cardholder’s of any major credit card.
Authorized and additional Authorized Operators
Additional drivers may be added to the rental at a cost of USD $5.00 per day. The minimum rental age for the Authorized Drivers will be the same as the renter. All Additional Authorized Drivers are required to be registered in the rental agreement.
Driver´s License
A valid driver's license from your country of residence, or an international driver's license must be presented at the counter.
GRACE PERIOD
Rentals have a grace period of 60 minutes.
Optional coverage do not have hourly charges/grace period, but are charged as a full day.
Extra hour charges will be incurred at the 60 minute mark if the vehicle is returned more than 59 minutes past the original rental time.
