Santa Rosa National Park

Santa Rosa National Park is important from both a historic and a natural standpoint. It is located in northwestern province of Guanacaste and it is one of the few remaining examples of the deciduous dry tropical forests that covered much of the Pacific Coast of Central America until only a few decades ago. In this park live white-faced, howler and spider monkeys, white-tailed deer, nine-banded armadillo, and white-nosed coatimundi. The rich avifauna includes many species seen only in the extreme northwest of Costa Rica such as Elegant Trogon, Ivory-billed Woodpecker and Olive Sparrow. For visitors with limited time, the short, easy-to-walk nature trail, near "La Casona" is a fine example of dry forest in recuperation and a good area for observing wildlife. Those with more time will want to explore some of the evergreen forest trails or hike to distant watering holes in search of animals that come to drink. "La Casona" is a famous historic house that played an important role in defense of Costa Rica's democracy. Near there, Costa Rican volunteer forces repelled an invading army from Nicaragua in 1876. In another area of the park, a second invasion in 1955 was also forestalled. Because of these two battles, Santa Rosa is perceived by most Costa Ricans as the symbol of their long-standing democracy. For lunchtime, you will be taken to Liberia, the capital of the province of Guanacaste.

The Guaitil Art Cooperative continues the long tradition of fine Chorotega Indian ceramic. In this town, people make clay pots by hand, decorate them with the earth's natural colors and fire them in giant wood-burning ovens, just as their ancestors, the Chorotega Indians, did.  Descendants of this Indian tribe own and operate the center while generating their modem creations employing the techniques of their ancestors.  The Chorotegas is a group of Indians who ruled the land between Lake Nicaragua and the Nicoya Peninsula.
